Lucknow LIterature Festival is one of the largest literary festivals in India, having taken up the mantle to preserve as well as propagate the culture and heritage of the city.
And in this quest we’ve had help from renowned personalities from all walks of life – from literature and music to culture and politics – these are the top 5 celebrities have graced the event with their presence:
- Javed Akhtar
The other half of the Salim-Javed duo that gave Bollywood some of its largest movies, Mr. Akhtar is a recipient of the Padma Shri (1999), Padma Bhushan (2007), the Sahitya Akademi Award as well as five National Film Awards.
He was a speaker at the 2014 edition of Lucknow Literature Festival where he talked about the author Majaz. He has also credited his poetry and love for the Urdu language to the upbringing he received in the city of Lucknow.
- Madhuri Dixit Nene
Even as she continues to enthrall the audience with her acting skills and mesmerising beauty; Madhuri Dixit Nene is also actively involved in social activities – caring actively about issues like environment conservation, animal protection and child rights.
She attended the Lucknow Literature Festival as UNICEF’s Brand Ambassador for Child Rights and spoke about child sexual abuse, bullying, child labour, sanitation and health issues.
- Amish Tripathi
Author of the popular Shiva Trilogy, Amish Tripathi has opened the doors of mythology for all Indians with his fantasy re-imagining of the Indian mythological stories. In fact, The Shiva Trilogy was the fastest selling book series in Indian publishing history.
Amish was a speaker at the 2015 edition of the Lucknow Literature Festival, where he talked about how wrote 2 books while handling a full time banking job and how his grandfather and parents provided the muse for writing these books with their religious knowledge.
- Shabana Azmi
Regarded as one of the finest actresses in India, Shabana Azmi has experience in theater, television and films. Her performances have garnered her several praises and awards, including 5 National Awards.
At the 2015 edition of the Lucknow Literature Festival, Mrs. Azmi said – “Lucknow Literature
Festival is one of a kind which emphasizes on Hindi, Awadhi and Urdu. It promotes Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb”.
- Shyam Benegal
Shyam Benegal is the man responsible for introducing the new genre in the Indian film industry – middle cinema or as he prefers it to be called, New/Alternate Cinema.
Attending the 2014 edition of the Lucknow Literature Festival, Shyam said, “This festival has given some memorable and pleasant experiences which i’m going to take a long way with me”.
